Adult treatment

It is never too late — as long as your teeth and gums are healthy

Teeth move at any age. What changes after thirty is not whether treatment works, but how it fits around work, photographs, meetings and everything else in an ordinary week.

That is why most of our adult patients choose Invisalign® clear aligners: they are clear, removable, and you eat and drink normally. Plenty choose braces instead, and that is a perfectly reasonable decision — braces are driven by the bite rather than the appliance, and clear (ceramic) brackets are much less visible than metal.

A small number of adult cases are different: where the jaw itself is the problem, moving teeth alone will not hold, and we plan surgical orthodontics with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

How we decide

Aligners or braces — the honest comparison

Both straighten teeth and correct the bite. The differences are compliance, hygiene and, in rare cases, the bite itself.

Adults usually ask

Adult aligner questions, answered

Is it too late for braces in my 40s or 50s?

No. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, teeth move at any age. Adult treatment typically runs 6 to 18 months, and a large share of our adult patients are in their forties, fifties and beyond.

Will anyone notice I am wearing braces?

That depends on what you choose. Clear aligners are clear, removable, and the more aesthetic option at work. Clear (ceramic) braces use tooth-colored brackets, so they are much less visible than metal — but they are still braces, and they are still visible up close. We will not tell you either one is invisible.

Can adults use Invisalign®?

Yes, and most adult aligner cases at our office are treated with Invisalign®. It is the adult system in the range — teenagers are treated with Invisalign Teen® and children with Invisalign First®. The names are not interchangeable.

What if I need jaw surgery?

For a minority of adult cases the underlying problem is the position or size of the jaw rather than the teeth, and moving teeth alone will not hold. That is surgical orthodontics, planned together with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Most adult cases need no surgery at all.

How much does adult treatment cost?

Most treatment at our office falls between $3,400 and $6,250, and that range is the same whether you choose metal braces, clear braces or Invisalign® — we price by how complex the bite is rather than by the appliance. Your exact fee is quoted in writing at the free exam.

Does insurance cover adult orthodontics?

Many adult dental plans exclude orthodontics entirely, which does not change whether treatment is possible — only how it is paid for. We are in-network with most major PPO plans that do carry orthodontic benefits, and we will verify your specific coverage and give you the same written quote either way.
